Quick Facts About The Shedd Aquarium

    • The aquarium is home to 32,000 animals and 1,500 species that inhabit freshwater, marine, terrestrial, and aerial environments.
    • Shedd is one of the most highly trafficked aquariums in the U.S. with 2 million guests visiting every year.
    • The Shedd Aquarium was the first inland aquarium with a permanent saltwater fish collection.
    • The aquarium makes sustainability a priority—from water-conserving exhibits to “green” gardens that use local cocoa bean shells to keep the soil healthy.
    • John G. Shedd, who was president of the department store giant Marshall Field & Company, was the inspiration behind the Shedd Aquarium. However, he never got to see the aquarium come to life because he died in 1926. The aquarium opened on May 30, 1930.
    • It takes about 3-4 hours to see everything in the Shedd Aquarium. Plan to spend a whole morning or afternoon getting up close and personal with every marine species under the sea.

Tips for a Great Experience at The Shedd Aquarium

    1. Buy your tickets in advance. The Shedd Aquarium is one of the top places to visit in Chicago, so most likely, there will be a line when you arrive. When you buy your tickets ahead of time, show your tickets on your mobile device to gain entry.
